HOLOCAUST EDUCATION AND GENOCIDE PREVENTION INITIATIVE. Salzburg Global, 2010-2018

The Salzburg Global Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention Initiative was a multi-year initiative that has been developed in cooperation with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Austrian Foreign Ministry to explore the links between Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention. Dr. Klaus Mueller, Representative for Europe of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, served as its Chair since its foundation in 2010 to 2018.

Bringing together especially educators and policy makers from the Global South, we asked how to teach about the Holocaust in countries that were not directly affected by it. Do the lessons of this largely Europe-based event help us to understand contemporary instances of genocide or mass violence? And vice versa, how does our evolving understanding of contemporary genocide contribute to an evolving understanding of the Holocaust? Over the years, we organized five global symposia plus smaller meetings looking at contemporary approaches in Holocaust education and genocide prevention initiatives.
