The Salzburg Global Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention Initiative (2010–2018) explored contemporary approaches to Holocaust education and genocide prevention. Bringing together educators, policymakers, and civil society leaders—particularly from the Global South—the Initiative examined how the Holocaust can be taught in societies not directly affected by it. It asked how the lessons of this largely European event can help us understand contemporary genocide and mass violence, and conversely, how emerging scholarship and experience from more recent genocides can deepen our understanding of the Holocaust. Over eight years, the Initiative convened five global symposia and a series of smaller meetings. Dr. Klaus Mueller served as Chair throughout its duration.
